Literature Text

It doesn't happen every night, but it's been happening for years.

I know it's starting when I can't move anymore. No matter how hard I try, my muscles are locked into place. My arms and legs stay frozen. My mouth remains closed.

Then I see the figure. It's always a shadow, human-like, but too tall and too thin. It's never directly in front of me, either. It's always off to the side, just barely in my peripheral vision.

The figure moves closer to my bed. I can hear it slowly creeping up. Finally, I feel its weight on the bed beside me.

I still can't move.

It leans down over my face. I can only see it out of the corner of my eye, and it disappears when I focus on it. But I can feel its hair brushing my cheek and hear it breathing in my ear.

I still can't move.

It whispers in a raspy voice.

"Don't worry, child. I'll keep the monsters away."
"Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which a person, either during falling asleep (Hypnagagia) or awakening (Hypnopompia), temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, or react...It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (such as an intruder in the room) to which one is unable to react." (from Wikipedia)

This one was actually inspired by a tumblr comic and not an artwork on dA. The original comic is here. I normally don't browse tumblr, but I happened upon that comic elsewhere, and when I read it my writing fingers started twitching. So here we are.

Oh look, this is #13 and a horror story. Huh.

Preview image is just a quick photomanipulation I whipped up in about 30 min.

Everyday Vignettes

The Project:
Find a work of visual art on dA and create a vignette about it as close to daily as possible.

The Rules:
1. All Everyday Vignettes are independent of the artwork's original context and/or narrative.
2. No Everyday Vignettes shall exceed 200 words.
3. The creators of all artworks that inspire Everyday Vignettes shall always have their artworks linked and credited.
4. If any creator of an artwork wants me to remove their artwork from my dA page, I will happily do so.
